This required two reads. I first picked this book up in 2009 not hearing the message. In 2011, I hit a wall and renewed my own commitment to my health. When I hit a wall again in 2013, I realized I wasn't giving something up. It is only now in mid-2014 when accepted to take in a new consulting role that I started to see the light of how unsustainable my initiatives are. It is a JOY to review this book in full, not feel pressured to do the imagery exercises & hear the deep down wisdom Dina has to share. She has by far the most balanced view of burnout that is not clinical (but still grounded in research & experience) and doesn't "blame" society for its relationship to "work" - I am someone who has been burnt out by my own life's work - my own agenda. I hit the end of my own journey, one I put myself on! I now realize what there is to do is attend to myself, make Radical Healing my life's work - what there is to attend to & be passionate about. I am very grateful for this piece of work & recommend it to anyone who finds themselves at wit's end simply pursuing their life dream.

This was a great book. Spot on and very helpful.
It was helpful and I enjoyed reading it.
I read this book again, 6 years after the first reading. It definitely helped after the first time, but life goes on and circumstances change, so I realized after some months into the new state of affairs that I needed a refresher. The book was as meaningful second time through. A most important feature for me is that Glouberman knows the burn out experience from the inside. She also respects the danger of the condition and the profundity of the experience. There's no pushing the reader to "recover" and return to being "productive." The tone is sensible, kind, but not maternalistic. I never had the feeling I was being talked down to; rather I found just good old support for my own experience here. It's certainly a keeper in my library.

My only complaint is that the title doesn't capture the real feeling of the book. Seems Pollyanna-ish, hits a false note. Better something like The Value of Burn-out.
Chaos to compassion! I know situations in life present extreme challenges but changing perspective is a gift that enables us to get through high levels of distress. This book points out the benefits of doing just that.....lessons from which we can all benefit. Highly recommend reading this to promote higher quality of living.
I have acquired several self-help books of late having reached a burned out state in my mid fifties and over 25 years in the medical profession. Like several of the individuals in the book, I have burned out on several occasions during my training and professional life. This book effectively identifies the root cause of burnout; those episodes that I have experienced on several occasions but have never read and stated to succinctly. I especially appreciate the distinction made from 'burnout' and 'depression' though the two certainly coexist. True that there is unlikely one book out there that would solve the problem but the insight is very much appreciated.
Dr. Dina masterfully combines science and practical exercises to guide the burnout sufferer to recovery. When I had burnout myself, Dr. Dina's book was a lifesaver. I read it several times, and each time gained a deeper understanding of what burnout means and what to do about it. You should not miss this book if you think you might have burnout, or know someone who does.
I had to get this book on - every time I buy a hard copy, I give it away to someone who needs it. It goes into the very dark depths of burnout without wallowing in it, and the steps to recovery are helpful. From this book you learn exactly what burnout is (and it is necessary to distinguish it from ordinary stress), how it feels and what causes it. You also realise how serious burnout is, but you also see it as a leap into a newer, fuller life. So many of my colleagues in the "helping professions" need this book, and they have found that there is someone out there who understands. Wonderful to realise you are not as alone as you thought you were, and that there is a way out.
